A general model of hydraulic shock absorber (monotube and twin tube) for automobiles based on the geometrical and physical properties of its components is described in order to predict the mechanical and thermal behaviour from a known working condition. simulation calculates the damping force and the temperature fields of the shock absorber components as well as makes an energy analysis from which the energy required to do the working cycles, the shock absorber dissipated energy to the environment and the accumulated energy into the shock absorber are predicted. additionally, the necessity of using the shock absorbers as part of the automobile suspension system and the optimization method is presented. the experimental validation is done by using a shock absorber testing machine which permits to obtain actual shock absorber force versus position and/or speed for a sinusoidal working cycle by using both, a position and force sensors.
