Research on membranes and on membrane processes has been developed since many years, but the effort made on membrane functionality in order to increase their application field has increased in recent years. The utilization of hydride materials has been demonstrated to be an important approach in many fields of science, and particularly, in separation processes (for example, in polymeric/zeolite systems). In this work, activated carbon was used to obtain composite membranes. They offer the potential of combine the simple utilization of polymers with the functional properties of carbon materials. Nevertheless, the incorporation of the activated carbon responds also to a second objective: the production of enzymatic membrane reactors by taking advantage of its adsorption capability. Therefore it is possible to obtain a single unit which carries out two processes: separation and reaction. This is process intensification that it is one of the main research trends. the scope of the work involves three stages: a first one devoted to the study of the synthesis of polymeric membranes in order to obtain a wide range of morphologies and so far, a wide range of different molecular weight cut-off membranes. The second stage involves the addition of activated carbon to the previous polymeric membranes and its characterization in order to carry out the third stage concerning on the synthesis of enzymatic membrane reactors based on polysulfone and activated carbon, which holds the roll of supporting the enzymes in several ways. in the first stage, the scope was carefully defined because of the large number of variables that can be considered. The synthesis was performed using the immersion precipitation method, the polymer used was polysulfone, and first of all, the effect of its concentration in the polymeric mixture was studied.
