Foreign direct investment (fdi) is a key element of the internationalization process. Fdi infows in the world in 2006 reached us$ 1.2 trillion in 2006, up substantially from us$ 823 billion in 2001, and their size is constantly growing (united nations conference for trade and development statistics). fdi is strongly associated with the location strategies of multinational enterprises (mnes).
