Self compacting concrete is introducing a great advance in concrete technology in terms of economics, labor health, safety and environmental impact of construction codes. Since its introduction, the concept of self-compacting concrete (scc) has captured the interest of researchers, prefabrication companies and contractors around the world for its many benefits. However, the lack of validation or consideration inside the current design codes of this type of concrete is a legitimate reason for its limited use. failure of concrete elements under shear can be considerably sudden and brittle, especially in high strength concrete hsc. In the case of self compacting concrete and due to the large amount of fine aggregate, the aggregate interlock and shear friction mechanisms may be reduced, resulting in a lower shear strength than that of conventional vibrated concrete cvc. however, there are hardly few experimental test data concerning the structural behavior of prestressed high strength self compacting concrete elements. the purpose of this research is to determine if self compacting concrete is safe and effective for use in precast prestressed beams, by clarifying the main mechanisms of shear transfer and through the evaluation of shear capacity for those specific structural elements. Therefore, a comprehensive experimental and theoretical research program was carried out at the department of construction engineering of the upc, with the support of the prefabrication company alvisa. firstly, a state of the art of the technological aspects of self compacting concrete and shear design methods for prestressed beams has been made. subsequently, twelve tests were carried out at the structural technology laboratory to study the shear behavior of six full-scale prestressed high strength self-compacting concrete simply supported i-beams of 10 m long, with and without shear reinforcement. Two of these beams were made with conventional vibrated con
