Novel possibilities and applications of composite right/left-handed (crlh) metamaterial transmission lines have been analyzed in this work. An active crlh transmission line theory has been proposed and demonstrated. Moreover, an application of this active transmission line, based on a microstrip leaky-wave antenna, has been developed. The principle of this radiating structure is founded on the integration of amplifiers along the metamaterial structure, which regenerate the energy leaked out by the leaky wave propagating along the transmission line. Furthermore, a new crlh leaky-wave transmission line configuration has been proposed in order to reduce the cross-polar component, which is relatively high in conventional crlh leaky-wave antennas. The bandwidth of the typically used crlh unit cells in microstrip technology, based on inductive grounded stubs and series interdigital capacitors, has been analyzed. Besides, a broadband wire-bonded interdigital capacitor has been proposed and proved by experimental work. This wire-bonded interdigital capacitor removes the stop bands in transmission mode which degrade the crlh transmission line performance, reducing its useful bandwidth. Finally, different issues for future research, related to active crlh transmission lines and wire-bonded interdigital capacitors, are also discussed.
