The dynamics of small bodies suspended in low reynolds number flows: applications in phisics and biology

Tesis doctoral de Idan Tuval Gefen

The scope of my research has been the motion of bodies immersed in low reynolds number fluid flows. With a combination of methods from fluid dynamics and dynamical systems i addressed fundamental problems and cross-disciplinary applications with particular interest in those inspired by biological questions. i studied the dynamics of finite-size neutrally-buoyant spherical particles in chaotic 3d flows, the origin of the left-right asymmetry in the developing embryo of vertebrates, the phenomenon of enantiomeric selection in the crystallization of chiral molecules in advecting environments and the control of microparticles in microfluidic devices. i have been strongly impressed by the power of the cross-disciplinary cooperation between physics and biology not only to progress to the solution of long standing problems in life sciences but also to motivate genuinely new physics. In particular, near the triple border of microfluidics bio-fluidics and dynamics i can see a wide range of unexplored opportunities of great interest to me
