Circulación monetaria en la hispania del siglo ii d.c.

Tesis doctoral de Laura Arias Ferrer

This research deals with the coin circulation in hispania in the 2nd century ad, which is realized with the numismatic findings, which were compiled in many works and researches of different kinds. Chronologically, it covers the period between the government of nerva and the death of commodus, from ad 96 to 192. Geographically, it is placed in the iberian peninsula, which included the countries of spain and portugal. It is necessary to compartmentalize the space to be able to make a thorough study about any aspect that requires a detailed observation. In this way, we are going to define the areas as: peninsular levant, ebro valley, cantabrian zone, north meseta, south meseta, guadalquivir valley and andalusian coastal and atlantic area. In each zone, we want to concentrate on different questions, which are related to the coin circulation, such as:- rate of the coin supply, trying to know its intensity and frequency in the peninsula. To do that, we need to know for certain the issuing emperor. – Dispersion of the coins, starting from the realization of a map with the coin findings, which allows us to observe clearly the permeability of the different urban and rural centres with regard to the monetary phenomenon. We need to know the exact provenance of the findings, to do that.- Evolution of the coin values along the 2nd century ad., And the more or less representativeness of each one. Only those with a known value have been considered. – Survival of the coins, starting from the information of the coin and its archaeological context. The coins analyzed were those, which have been found in 2nd century contexts, independently of the date of minting, and those which were minted in the 2nd century and their find contexts were known. All these points are dealt with in this order in each geographical area that we have described. When it is possible, we try to give some brief information about the monetary phenomenon, before and after the chronological period selected: 1 st century a.D. And 3rd century ad. We want to be able to establish an evolution and find a good setting where we can compare and locate the conclusions. All these aspects offer us a variety of information, which can be analysed and inserted in the historical development of the iberian peninsula. This research offers new information from an historical and archaeological source, such as the coin.
