Verticillium wilt of artichoke caused by verticillium dahliae kleb. Is an important limiting factor of artichoke production in eastern-central spain. Verticillium wilts are among the most difficult plant diseases to control mainly because of the broad host range and virulence diversity of the pathogen and the long survival of the resting structures (microscleriotia) in soil. The spectrum of vegetative compatibility groups (vcgs) diversity among v. Dahliae isolates from artichoke in eastern-central spain was assessed in earlier studies. This information is essential since, in the absence of sexual stage, isolates from different vcgs are thought to be genetically isolated populations which may vary in some ecological, physiological and virulence traits. In this sense, knowledge about the molecular and virulence diversity in the pathogen population is a key factor for the management of the disease. Population of v. Dahliae affecting artichoke in eastern-central spain is well characterized, however, information about basic epidemiological aspects and host specificity are necessary to better understand this pathosystem. Furthermore, there is a need of new control strategies for the disease management in the area of study. inoculum density-disease development relationship was studied in ten commercial artichoke fields. To this aim, inoculum levels were analyzed and plants were monitored for disease at the beginning and the end of the growing season and along two consecutive growing seasons. V. Dahliae inoculum densities ranging from 5 to 9 microsclerotia per gram of soil were associated with a mean percentage of infected plants of about 50 %.
