Although beam-and-block floors have been in use around the world since the 40s, the models currently used to calculate shear failure strength lack a strong theoretical foundation and even experimental data is sparse. The aimof this research is to contribute to our knowledge of the behavior and strength of beam-and-block floors, principally those exposed to shear stress. to achieve this objective, an extensive review of the current state of the knowledge of shear strengths for beam-and-block floors, and t-section beams without shear reinforcement was done, as well as in-depth research into the previous experimental results. an experimental programme testing the beams that form beam-and-block floors under a load point was performed. Main design variables were: flange thickness, precast beam type, degree of longitudinal reinforcement, stress in the precast concrete caused by prestressing, and beam-and-block floor depth. Results were analyzed to study the influence of these variables, and are also compared with the predictions generated by the methods used to design these types of elements. additionally, tested elements were analyzed using the tinsa-evo software, which is based on a smeared-crack, nonlinear sectional model with rotating-cracks, to better understand the stress distribution in the section of this type of elements. Results of this analysis were compared with the experimental results. furthermore, a mechanical model for the design and prediction of beam-and-block floor resistance was proposed. The mechanical model agreed with the experimental results. The model was extrapolated to calculate the shear strength of t-section beams without shear reinforcement, and the model was in good agreement with experimental results from the literature. finally, some recommendations for future studies are made based on these findings.
