Surface self-assembly of electroactive molecules as wires and switches

Tesis doctoral de Claudia Delgado SimÁ£o

The aim of the present thesis is to construct switches in surfaces based on a bottom-up approach using multifunctional molecules as building blocks and use self-assembly to address these building blocks onto surfaces. The multifunctional systems on study are based on polychlorotriphenylmethyl radicals and tetrathiafulvalenes, which both are families of molecules exhibiting bistability based on their redox pairs, where each redox state exhibits different magnetic, electric and optical properties. This bistability is the basis of the device, where one can switch between states by applying an external stimulus, in this case, a voltage that allows to reach each redox state. Then, the optical, magnetic or electric properties of this switch can be used read-out mechanisms of the fabricated molecular devices. Highly robust, stable and revesible molecular devices were possible to fabricate in the present work.
