Null the changes of manzanares, jarama and tagus floodplains, between Madrid and toledo cities have been studied. This work is based on historic and topographic maps, geological and geomorphological cartographies, aerial photos, geophisical data and field work. All sources have been integrated in a geographical information system (gis). the study is divided into five sections: 1) the pleistocene fluvial deposits, focused on the development of complex terraces due a karst subsidence. The subsurfaces g eometry of the karst has been stablished and provide evidence of a transition karst; 2) change in channel geometry over time as well as along the valley, has been studied by setting a channel classification based on sinuosity and radious of curvature . Abandoned meanders have been considered as well to define four geomorphológical cycles of change (1580-1750, 1750-1877, 1877-1956 y 1956-2004). Each cycle starts with a migration dominated period, ending with a cutoffs one. Both periods can be sepa rated by a geomorphic threshold, through the sinuosity index; 3) a new methodology has been made to estimate the channel migration, not only the average but also de shape and direction of movement has been considered (1877-2004). A good correlation h as been stablished between the karst depth and channel migration in jarama river; 4) floodplain changes have been studied including the interaction between the fluvial geomorphology and the main landuses, agriculture and gravel mining (1945-2004) and 5) the sedimentary record has been overviewed, focused on fluvial architecture and sedimentation environments. key words: fluvial geomorphology, landuses, gis, karst
