La logica del proyecto urbano y la transformacion del espacio no construido dentro de la renovacion urbana de los contextos historicos

Tesis doctoral de Guieshuba Y. Gallegos Ferrer

This research deals with the urban renewal of historical contexts, which have become the setting place for a large and wide variation of urban projects with the simple target of bringing them to life, stopping the decaying process they suffer or preventing them from disappearing. Nowadays these areas are no longer the historical centers or the oldest part of a city, we can consider as a historical context the industrial areas developed in the early 19th century or the suburban areas developed in the mid of the 20th century. They distinguished themselves because their urban tissue is related to their old uses and functions, differing from the nearby tissue in the city. As well, these areas might shelter some of the monuments which in many cases convert them into historical patrimony, representing a special value to society. For that reason, conservation and urban transformation of this kind of historical urban tissue is complex. There exist different approaches and diverse values involved, which lead to multiple points of views regarding the best way to renovate them. nevertheless, in the last 30 years different approaches have been developed to tackle the challenge, offering several and possible ways, although there is not a single plan or urban design methodology that can be followed which can guarantee a successful intervention. Therefore, this research aims to underline an efficient alternative for the solution of urban renewal in historical contexts, especially in its urban tissue, through a method which can achieve an integrated renovation, represented in the solution of the physical conservation (the urban forms) and the social conservation (the people) of these areas. Showing respect to its historical values and integrating the new urban forms into the underlying urban structure, avoiding the incompatibility of the old and new uses, without affecting the functionality of the area as a whole. For such purposes this research develops the following two hypotheses: 1.The use of the urban project logic applied to the process of transformation during the urban renewal in historical contexts. 2.The urban design, transformation and improvement of the non built space within the historical contexts, which strengthens an integrated renovation within these areas. as examples two different historical contexts: the chiado in lisbon and the barri vell in gerona, were analyzed using the experimental theory, which allowed the study of the urban project, as well as the urban tools used to put it into practice, helping to identify the urban process of each of the transformations. these analyses are presented in two parts. The first one dealing with the process of the transformation itself, because the way in which an urban project is carried out, has an impact on the final result. Consequently i suggest the use of a method named the urban project logic (la lógica del proyecto urbano), which proves to be very useful for the transformation of historical contexts. In the second part, the non built spaces were analyzed, because a decomposition of their elements offers the opportunity to know the form in which they are structured and how they can regulate and articulate between the built space and open space. The non built space has the capacity to bring quality to the urban tissue and can help in setting standards for the integration of new urban forms and in some cases improving the obsolete ones.
